One of my favorite ways to while away an hour is winding my way thru row after row of trees bursting with glistening, deep red cherries. My attention fixated on the heavy branches, eyes feasting on the color palate of red fruit, green leaves and blue sky.

branches loaded with bing cherries

A cooling breeze is a welcome counterpart to the warmth of the sun filtering thru the trees. Hands reaching for the perfectly ripe fruit and claiming particular cherries as my own. Into my bucket they go with a few not making it past my mouth.

As my teeth break the skin of my first cherry of the season and the sweet tasty juice bursts forth, thrilling my taste buds, I am more than content.
Cherry picking is therapeutic and a peacefulness settles on me sometime during the experience. I always feel tranquil and quiet inside for hours afterwards. It’s a day well spent and I have a bucket full of treasure to bring home.

2010 Cherry Picking is underway!

5 star ranch entrance cherry picking

We went to the 5 Star Ranch this year and had such a wonderful time. We came home with many pounds of delicious Bing & Rainier cherries. These cherries are so much more flavorful than the supermarket. The people who run 5 Star Ranch are so friendly. If you ask and sometimes even if you don't they'll take the time to point out trees that have big ripe cherries.

5 star ranch friendly people cherry picking

They never use any pesticides or herbicides. The cherries are $3.00 lb but if you get on their email list they'll email you a coupon for a free pound with purchase. For the remainder of the season their hours will be: 8:00am - 3:00pm Saturday and Sunday, and 8:00am - 1:00pm weekdays thru June 2nd and possibly thru July 4th if they have cherries left. You can call or check their website for updated information:

Some Cherry picking tips:

pick your own cherries

Cherry season can be as short as 2 weeks or as long as 6 weeks so don’t wait. ( Although one farm’s cherries can be all gone and the another’s farm can still have plenty )

It’s a good idea to call first since a few farms are already open but most will be opening on June 12 or June 18th. You can also just drive down to Leona Valley and find signs directing you to open orchards. ( Bring this list with handy phone numbers in case you have any trouble finding an open orchard )

Go early to beat the heat but bring a jacket since the weather is unpredictable. Wear suncreen and bring a hat to shade your face. Bring water to keep hydrated.

Cherries stain so dress appropriately and bring baby wipes for the little ones.

You’ll be walking on dirt with holes here and there so closed toed shoes are strongly recommended.

rows of cherry trees

Make sure your child knows to spit out the cherry pit. If you’re in doubt bring along or buy a cherry pitter.

Just a reminder: always keep your children in sight - a good rule in any public place

You might want to bring a cooler to keep the cherries their very freshest during the drive home: Once you get your cherries home, promptly refrigerate them and wash just prior to eating. You can freeze cherries. We like to pit them first so you can use them in smoothies all year long

Sour cherries make the best pies but are scarce. Call Cherry Tyme (661) 270-0649 for harvest dates.

Some details vary from farm to farm so call or check the farm’s website’s if any of the following are important to you:

Bring cash. Only a few places take credit cards so call if you need to charge your cherries. There is no charge for parking or admission. I have heard that some have a minimum purchase amount but I’ve never encountered this personally.

Some orchards plant full grown trees while others plant dwarf trees making all the cherries more accessible, especially for children.

Certain orchards have places to wash up and/or port-a-potties, tractor or wagon rides, picnic and barbeque areas and some offer other items for sale like cookbooks, t-shirts, cold drinks, water, honey, nuts, cherry pitters, baked goods and more!

Many of these orchards are pesticide free. Others are also herbicide, insecticide free and others are certified Organic.

Most orchards don’t allow pets.

Generally, you are asked to pick only the cherry and leave the stem which insures a good crop of cherries next year.

fresh picked cherry

Some farms let you bring scissors and cut the cherries mid stem. Cherries with the stem intact are said to stay fresh longer.

bing cherries on tree branch

One tree's cherries can taste different from the next. You might want to sample one from each tree you pick from. Remember, you pay by the pound so only taste the cherries and wait to feast until after you buy.

Why not catch a minor league game? See the professionals, before they hit the big time and before they charge the big bucks for tickets. The Lancaster Jethawks are a class A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

This is a fun day spent outdoors with t-shirts shot into the stands, bouncers and games for the kids. There are even two "hawk" mascots, Kaboom & Stealth, who love to interact with the fans. Maybe, you can even get the ballplayers to sign some autographs.

Lancaster Jethawks ball signing

The Jethawks play at Clear Channel Stadium in Lancaster. There are 45 home games left in this season and there are plenty of tickets available. You can purchase tickets online, here.

The individual ticket prices start at $6.00 and soar to a whopping $12.00 for club level seats. Call (661) 726-5400 for information regarding season seats, special ticket mini-plan pricing or the Junior Jethawks Kids Club. They have some great promotions going on for select games. Click here for the promotion schedule.

All the kids get to run from one side of the field to the others in between certain innings. It's also possible to arrange for your little leaguer and his team to run out on the field with the players before a game.

The last performance of Disney’s Aladdin, the long running "musical spectacular” at Disney’s California Adventure theme park was scheduled for August 15th. The 2000 seat Hyperion Theatre, located in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot section of California Adventure has been home to the 40 minute extravaganza since January 2003. In December, Disney had announced it was closing the the curtain on Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular's seven year run. Disney confirmed that plans were in place to have "Toy Story - The Musical" ( from Disney Cruise ship - Wonder ) make the Hyperion theatre it's new home.

California Adventure Hyperion Theatre Aladdin

This news was greeted with dismay in my household and from the many fans who have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the free ( with park admission, of course ) "Broadway style" production.

Aladdin Musical California Adventure

"Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular" has it all: lush, larger than life sets, impressive stage effects, lively dance sequences, favorite songs from the well-loved animated classic movie, a rags to riches love story, a flying carpet and a wise cracking Genie with impeccable comic timing.

Cave of Wonders Aladdin California Adventure

The show is exciting and thanks to Genie, fall out of your theatre seat, funny. The comedy is kept up to date with references to current events. I've personally seen the show several times and it always felt fresh and it never dissapointed.

Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular California Adventure

Whooopeee! Disney announced this month, due to popular demand, Aladdin will stay, indefinitely! Insert happy dance here!
"Aladdin- the Musical Spectacular" lives on!

What about “Toy Story – The Musical”? Disney says: “Buzz, Woody and their pals will stay focused on the new additions in Toy Story Mania…for now”

Aww, sorry guys, but you still "have a friend in me" and a place in my heart. I promise to take the family to go see "Toy Story 3"!

If you want to catch "Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular", you now know where to find it. For more details and showtimes:

The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is a State Natural Reserve and consists of California's most consistent poppy fields.

California Golden Poppy state flower

The California poppies are a hardy wildflower. The wildflower fields at the park are not watered or fertilized by humans and are subject to nature's unpredictable rain supply. Some years the poppies are abundant other years they are scarce in comparison.

The wildflowers are usually in bloom from March until May sometimes even starting in mid - February. They are usually in peak bloom around mid April. There are eight miles of trails to walk & benches to take a rest & enjoy what this Mojave Desert Grassland habitat has to offer. There is a picnic area so pack some lunch. A paved pathway goes partway into the reserve and over to the picnic area allowing wheelchair access.

California Golden Poppy Eschsholtzia californica
The golden poppy ( botanical name: Eschsholtzia californica ) was named by naturalist Adelbert Von Chamisso, who sailed into San Francisco Bay where he was met by golden poppy covered hills.

Common wildflowers at the reserve are, of course, California poppies and owl's clover, lupine, goldfield, cream cups, coreopsis & more!

Some wildlife you may encounter are: hawks, meadow larks, lizards gopher snakes, gophers ( if the gopher snakes don't get them first ), Mojave green rattlesnakes ( a good reason to stay on the trails ), coyote, bobcat, mice, kangaroo rats, beetles, scorpions & more. Have your camera ready

California Golden Poppy Eschsholtzia californica
The California golden poppy was selected as the official State flower of California by an act of the Legislature on March 2, 1903. In 1973, April 6 of each year was designated as California Poppy Day.

Some things that are good to know:

Don't sit on or pick a wildflower for your girl because picking or destroying wildflowers in the park is a violation of State law.

All features of the park are protected, including wildlife, rocks and historic objects. Don't try to take them home unless you get a permit first!

Everyone must stay on the trails and no horses, bicycles or dogs are allowed with the exception of service dogs.

Just a reminder that there are rattlesnakes so if you see one just let it go on it's way. They are not aggressive and but could bite if frightened or provoked.

The Antelope Valley weather can be unpredictable and is known for it's strong winds. Like any desert it can have extremes of temperature both hot & cold. Dress accordingly, bring layers and plenty of suncreen.

Antelope Valley California Poppy Hills

While the visitor Center and entrance kiosk are closed at the writing of this post The Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve will stay open to visitors on a self pay/self guided basis. This is good time to visit if you want a peaceful walk without the crowds at peak Poppy season.

Parking Fees
$8 per vehicle
$7 per vehicle with a senior on board (62 and over)
$4 per vehicle with DPR Disabled Discount Card
Small buses (9-24 passengers): $50
Large buses (25 or more passengers): $100

For more information, click here to visit the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve's website
