Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the western United States with a collection of over 150,000 objects from ancient times to the present day.

Nearly a million visitors pass through the museum doors and into the seven-building complex located on twenty acres in the heart of Los Angeles each year. The first phase of a ten-year expansion opened in earlier this year and introduced an open-air pavilion called the BP Grand Entrance as well as the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA, featuring 60,000 square feet of exhibition space on three floors. Here, you find art devoted to Barbara Kruger, Chris Burden, Jasper Johns, Richard Serra, Robert Rauschenberg, and many more.

Japanese calligraphy

This exhibition organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art features stunning Japanese calligraphy and imagery from the three main groups of Japanese artists for whom calligraphy became a central means of expression: Zen and other Buddhist monks, literati, who modeled themselves after the educated Chinese elite, and aristocrats of the imperial line, who bore the responsibility for maintaining authentic Japanese artistic principles.

Calligraphy is one of the highest forms of artistry according to Chinese and Japanese aesthetics and can reveal the character of the writer.

Southern California Art

This special exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art looks at both the utopian and dystopian art of southern California in the 1960s and 70s, with echoes into the 1980s and 1990s.

With sleek, elegant works of light and space and "finish fetish" artists on one hand, and gritty, tawdry images of California pop on the other hand, LACMA will take a look at both of these regional strands of art.
